McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women's tennis team is now the sole leader in the KCAC as they defeated previously undefeated Southwestern College 8-1 on Saturday morning. The team followed that up with a 9-0 sweep of Hesston College in the PM.
"We had one of our best practices the day before today's matches," said Coach Stuckey. "I thought we were very focused in the Southwestern match and played smart tennis all day."
The Lady 'Dogs came out aggressively in doubles and were able to win at each position. Nikki Thornburg and Nadine Baquiran won 8-3 at No. 2 while both Brittany Gourlay/Chandler Short and the Vorhees sisters triumphed 8-4 at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions, respectively.
A pair of quick matches at No. 6 (Claire Crossman, 6-1, 6-4) and No. 2 (Brooke Vorhees, 6-1, 6-2) put Mac at five points and from there the rest of the team coasted. The only loss for the MC women came at No. 4 where Gourlay lost 6-4, 6-3. Both Nikki Vorhees and Thornburg needed three sets to dispatch their opponent but were able to prevail.
It was an easy 9-0 win for McPherson against the Lady Larks as the team lost just four doubles points and three singles. In singles, the No. 3 through No. 6 positions were straight 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.
Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Tabor College; that match is scheduled for April 13th in Hillsboro, Kansas starting at 2:00 p.m. (CT)
