McPHERSON, Kan. ---
Rhea Vale (London, England) scored her first goal of the season to lead the McPherson College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday at McPherson Stadium.
Vale's goal came in the 36th minute when she redirected a corner kick by
Heather Diamond (Lake Forest, Calif.) into the goal past Oklahoma Wesleyan goalkeeper Sydney Vickers.
Offensively, the Bulldogs (7-4, 3-3 KCAC) outshot the Eagles (6-4-1, 4-3 KCAC), 14-4, including 8-1 in the second half.
Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) was credited with seven shots, although none found the frame.
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif.) and
Astrid Alvarez (Flagstaff, Ariz.) added two shots apiece, while Vale, Diamond and
Dina Der Vartanian (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had one each. In addition to Vale's goal, Alvarez, Diamond and Der Vartanian accounted for the other shots on goal.
The McPherson defense limited Oklahoma Wesleyan to just one shot on goal, leaving Bulldog keeper
Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) to make just one save in order to preserve the clean sheet.
"It certainly was nice to finally be on the receiving end of a set piece this year," said head coach Doug Quint. "I'm very proud of our work ethic tonight. It was nice to see us rewarded for it. That was a good Oklahoma Wesleyan program we beat and a very valuable three points [in the KCAC standings]. Now we have another tough opponent on Wednesday to prepare for."
The Bulldogs play a pair of games next week, starting with a game at Ottawa on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. McPherson's next home game will be next Saturday against Southwestern.
