McPHERSON, Kan. --- The McPherson College men's soccer team tallied two goals in the final 10 minutes to turn a 1-1 draw into a 3-1 victory over Sterling College on Saturday at the Kennel.
The Bulldogs (6-2-1, 1-1 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) converted a penalty kick, nestling his shot inside the right post against Sterling keeper Julio Chavez.
The Warriors (3-4-2, 0-1-1 KCAC) countered with a successful penalty kick of their own just before halftime as Adriano Marques beat McPherson keeper
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany) in the lower left corner.
After seeing the majority of the second half go by without another goal, McPherson tallied two in the last 10 minutes of play.
Jared Robbins (Cotati, Calif.) gave the Bulldogs the lead in the 81st minute after heading in a
Sean Morris (Cambridge, England) corner kick.
Morris added an insurance goal in the 88th minute off a service from
Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif.).
The Bulldogs held a commanding edge over the Warriors in shots (25-14), shots on goal (15-4) and corner kicks (10-2).
Torres led all players with five shots, while
Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland) and
Jesus Pescador (Valencia, Calif.) each had four shots, including three on goal.
Lamparter was credited with three saves in 90 minutes in goal.
Joel Fowler had a team-high four shots, including two of Sterling's four shots on goal. Marques added three shots off the bench.
Chavez was credited with 10 saves while taking the loss.
"It was good to see our men have some purpose to their possession today," said head coach
Doug Quint. "We were far better today offensively in front of goal and created a ton of chances. Give credit to the Sterling keeper for some of the saves he made."
Next up for McPherson is a Wednesday road test at KCAC rival Tabor in Hillsboro. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
