OTTAWA, Kan. --- A goal by
David Mwinga (Santa Rosa, Calif.) in the 66th minute proved to be the difference as the McPherson College men's soccer team posted a 2-1 win over Ottawa University Wednesday in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) play at Peoples Bank Field.
The host Braves (5-7-2, 4-2-1 KCAC) registered the first score as Ross Anderson beat McPherson keeper
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany) on a penalty kick.
The score held until the 41st minute when
Trent Keller (Salina, Kan.) netted the equalizer off an assist from
Jesus Pescador (Valencia, Calif.).
After being outshot 12-7 and facing an 8-1 deficit in corner kicks, McPherson (9-4-1, 4-3-0 KCAC) came out more aggressive in the second half. The Bulldogs had an 8-4 advantage in shots and had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks while taking the lead on Mwinga's goal.
Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland) was credited with an assist on the game-winner.
Ottawa finished the game with a slim 16-15 edge in shots overall with each team finishing with eight shots on goal. The Braves also had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Mwinga led all players with four shots, all of which found the frame.
Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif.),
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.),
Brayam De La Cruz (Bellevue, Idaho) and Pescador each added two shots for McPherson.
Lamparter was credited with six saves in 90 minutes in goal. His Ottawa counterpart, Edward Maya, also made six saves in a complete-game effort.
Zach Martin and Erasmo Torres led Ottawa with three shots apiece.
"I'm very pleased with our result," said head coach
Doug Quint. "Ottawa is very good defensively and tough to break down. This was a good road win for us. It was a very physical match and we stepped up to the challenge."
McPherson sits sixth in the KCAC standings with four games to play and will look to strengthen its positioning for the league tournament on Saturday when Southwestern (1-9-1, 0-6-1 KCAC) visits The Kennel. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. in McPherson.
