Mac Wins First, Loses Second in Winfield

Winfield, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team went 1-1 against Southwestern College on Tuesday; the Bulldogs won the first 5-3 but could not hold on in the second, losing 9-8.

Game 1 – W 5-3

In the opening game of the DH, the Moundbuilders jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning; SWC used four of their seven hits in their opening frame.

Mac had back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third to take a 4-3 lead; the 'Dogs added another run in the fourth to put them up 5-3.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh went relatively quick and the Lady Bulldogs were able to hang on for the 5-3 triumph.

Sydney Lang, Azaria Romero, and Katie Holmes tallied a hit and walked once; Lang and Romero were both hit by a pitch while Holmes made it aboard on base on balls.  Four other Bulldogs recorded hits in the win.

Lang pitched the complete game, allowing the three runs on seven hits and a walk through her seven innings.

Game 2 – L 9-8

After giving up a run in the first inning to Southwestern in game two of the doubleheader, McPherson plated three in the second to go on top 3-1; Cassandra Moreno was responsible for the three runs with her triple that turned into an inside the park homerun as she scored on the throw.

SWC took advantage of a Mac error to score three in the third, leap frogging the Bulldogs for a 4-3 lead.  McPherson answered with a four-run fourth inning, pushing them in front 7-4.

Both teams scored one in the sixth and then after a three-up, three-down showing by MC, the Lady Builders went on a hitting streak in the seventh and scored four runs to take the game 9-8.

McPherson logged eight hits, one walk, and they were hit by four pitches.  Shelby Maycumber and Katie Usdansky each recorded two hits.  Amanda Darrow, Alex Yeoman, and Moreno each had one hit and were hit by one pitch.

Usdansky pitched the first six innings; she gave up five runs, three that were earned, on nine hits and a walk.  Lang entered in the seventh and picked up the loss.

Mac will take on Oklahoma Wesleyan University this weekend in McPherson; currently the game is scheduled for Saturday at Wall Park starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)
