Women's Soccer Falls to Kansas Wesleyan in KCAC Opener

SALINA, Kan. --- The McPherson College women's soccer team faced a stiff test in its Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) opener, falling to No. 16 Kansas Wesleyan University, 3-0, on Wednesday at the Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes (6-0-2, 1-0 KCAC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Antonia Burrell in the sixth minute off an assist from Jen Rogers.

Taylor Veloz extended the KWU lead to two goals after converting a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

Rogers made it 3-0 in the 81st minute on a 25-yard direct free kick that sailed into the upper right 90.

The Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1 KCAC) had few opportunities to match during the contest as they could not find the frame against KWU keeper Jane Potter, who finished with two saves and a clean sheet.

Kansas Wesleyan outshot McPherson, 13-9, overall and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Danielle Kakebeen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had a team-high three shots, while Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) added a pair for the Bulldogs. Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) was credited with four saves in goal.

Rogers had a game-high four shots for Kansas Wesleyan, while Burrell, Veloz and Cynthia Chavez had two each.

"You can't give a good team goals and that is certainly what we did tonight," said head coach Doug Quint. "To lose on three set piece goals and zero in the run of play is tough to swallow. Good teams punish you when you aren't disciplined in the back. We just need to keep making strides to get better."

McPherson continues KCAC play Saturday afternoon when it hosts Sterling College at 12:30 p.m. at the Kennel in McPherson.
