WINFIELD, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime against Southwestern College but could not net the game-winner as the Lady Builders escaped with a 3-2 double-overtime victory Wednesday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
Karrie McNutt scored the game-winner for the Lady Builders with 4:48 to play in the second extra session.
Southwestern (5-7-2, 2-3-2 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) registered a pair of first-half goals, the first coming just 5:33 into the match. Maria Munoz sent a pair of shots towards McPherson goalkeeper
Christie Silber (Simi Valley, Calif., Simi Valley HS), who saved the first then saw the second hit off the crossbar. Valerie Stuerman took the rebound of the second shot and sent it into the back of the net from close range to put the Lady Builders ahead.
The second Southwestern goal came in the 28th minute as Brianna Alcorn out ran the Bulldog defense and beat Silber one-on-one with a shot from 10 yards out.
The 2-0 lead held through halftime, but McPherson (5-7, 2-5 KCAC) needed just 34 seconds to get on the board in the second half as
Emma Van Donselaar (Overland Park, Kan., Shawnee Mission West HS) found
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) for her fifth goal of the season. Guerrero added another goal five minutes later off a feed from
Juliana Munoz (Antelope, Calif., American River College) to knot the match at 2-2.
The Bulldogs were unable to get another shot past Southwestern goalkeeper Olyvia Bish despite holding an 8-3 edge in shots on goal in the second half. McPherson also took the only shot of the first overtime, but Bish was able to get her gloves on a shot by
Alexis Lynn (Pleasant Hill, Mo., Pleasant Hill HS) in the 99th minute.
In the 106th minute, McNutt found some space in the near corner of the box. She sent a shot toward goal, which dropped under the crossbar and into the upper corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Guerrero finished the match with six shots, including four on goal, to lead all players.
Danielle Kakebeen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., San Bernardino Valley College) added five shots - all of which found the frame - while
Brooke Russell (Hays, Kan., Barton County CC) had three shots.
Silber finished with six saves overall.
McNutt led Southwestern with five shots, three of which were on goal. Alcorn and Munoz each added four shots. Bish recorded 11 saves while going the distance in goal for the Lady Builders.
"After conceding two first-half goals, we settled down and started connecting passes," said head coach
Mark Olson. "At halftime, we talked about heart, passion, and intensity and the team delivered all three in the second half. Ana scored two phenomenal goals to tie the game and we continued to create opportunities throughout the second half. I am very proud of our team for not giving up and getting back in the game. It's unfortunate we did not get the win, but we have to do a better job starting the games with more focus and intensity as giving up early goals have hurt us all year. We will continue to learn from these experiences and build for the future."
McPherson (5-7, 2-5 KCAC) out-shot the Lady Builders, 20-16. The Bulldogs put 13 shots on goal, while nine Southwestern attempts were on target. Both teams were awarded three corner kicks, and both teams were whistled for nine fouls. The Bulldogs return to action Saturday with a trip to Lindsborg to face Bethany College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Lindstrom Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex.
