YORK, Neb. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's soccer team played its final road game of the regular season Saturday, falling to York, 2-1, in overtime at the Cornerstone Complex.
McPherson (7-8, 4-6 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) held a 6-2 advantage in shots in a scoreless first half, but saw host York (9-6-2, 6-3-1 KCAC) come alive in the second half.
The Panthers, buoyed by a goal by Logan Dye just 36 seconds off the restart after halftime, out-shot the Bulldogs, 11-5, in the second half. Of York's 11 shots in the period, eight found the frame.
It took until the 83rd minute for the visitors to find the equalizer as
Danielle Kakebeen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., San Bernardino Valley College) scored off an assist from
Alexis Lynn (Pleasant Hill, Mo., Pleasant Hill HS).
McPherson nearly won the match at the end of regulation but a shot by
Emma Van Donselaar (Overland Park, Kan., Shawnee Mission West HS) with two seconds left was saved by York goalkeeper Cassandra Martinez.
York controlled the pace of play in the extra session, sending a trio of shots in the direction of Bulldog goalkeeper
Christie Silber (Simi Valley, Calif., Simi Valley HS / Simi Valley Eclipse SC). The third shot produced the game-winner as Carmen Zavala connected with an off-balance shot that slipped past Silber. The ball - originally put in play off a Corinne McDonald corner kick - was headed on to Zavala by Hannah Wilke. Both McDonald and Wilke were credited with assists.
Van Donselaar finished with a team-high four shots, while Kakebeen and
Brooke Russell (Hays, Kan., Barton County CC) added two apiece. Each had two shots on goal.
Breanna Bembenek had a match-high five shots for York.
"This was a tough loss today," said head coach
Mark Olson. "We just have not shown any consistency with our play this year. The nice thing is we have a short turnaround with our next game being on Tuesday against Kansas Wesleyan so we can put this one out of our minds and work toward that game."
The Bulldogs close out the regular season Tuesday evening with a match against Kansas Wesleyan University (7-7-2, 6-3-1 KCAC). Kickoff from McPherson Stadium is slated for 5 p.m.
