Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (macbulldogs.com) --- Brooklyn Coe scored a game-high 21 points, but the McPherson College women's basketball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with an 86-79 loss at Bacone College Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (4-1) took the lead in the opening minute of the game on a basket by Sonerka White, then led 9-8 on a 3-pointer by Nicole Abunaja with 4:12 left in the quarter. The Warriors (2-1)  responded, however, with an 11-2 run to take a 19-11 lead after one quarter. McPherson was just 1-for-9 from the field during the stretch with the only made basket coming from Cami Richardson at the 1:54 mark.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs rallied to cut the deficit to just one point on a Danielle Holt basket with 2:00 to play in the half. McPherson could not maintain the momentum, though, as Bacone finished the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 39-29 halftime lead.

McPherson opened the second half with 11 straight points capped by a 3-pointer by Coe at the 6:08 mark to erase the deficit and take a 40-39 lead. The lead exchanged hands a number of times throughout the rest of the quarter, leaving the Bulldogs with a 59-58 advantage headed to the final stanza.

A Richardson 3-pointer with 8:44 to play gave McPherson a 65-62 lead, but Bacone battled back. Alyssa Springs scored a basket with 3:57 to play to give the Warriors a 77-67 lead, capping a 15-2 run. The Bulldogs rallied to make it a three-point game as Coe drained a pair of free throws with 24 seconds to play, but Springs hit a pair of free throws and Cierra Miles scored a basket in the final seconds to seal the victory.

The Bulldogs shot 38.5 percent (30-of-78) from the field with six 3-pointers but were just 13-of-23 at the free throw line.

Coe's game-high 21 points came on 7-of-16 shooting, including three 3-pointers. She also pulled down six rebounds.
