LAWRENCE, Kan (macbulldogs.com) --- The No. 20 McPherson College women's tennis team scored its first win of the spring season with a 6-3 victory over Baker University Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (1-1) took a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles.
Brittany Zipf (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, Emmaus College) and
Besa Bwalya (Hoisington, Kan., Hoisington HS) topped Kate Taylor-Doran and Sophie Robertson, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot,
Zoë Bouwmeester (Zutphen, Netherlands, Isendoorn College) and
Lea Striegel (Emmendingen, Germany, Albert-Schweitzer Gymnasium) defeated Jaimie Myers and Brooke Barnard, 8-5, at No. 2, and
Deiah Curtis (Great Bend, Kan., Bethany College) and
Madison Hoffman (McPherson, Kan., McPherson HS) beat Morgan Francis and Gracie Burton, 8-2, at No. 3.
McPherson clinched the match with wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 singles. Zipf defeated Taylor-Doran, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1; Striegel beat Myers, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4; and Curtis topped Benton, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. The Bulldogs also came close to wins at No. 2 and No. 5, but fell in match tie-breakers.
The Bulldogs return to the court Saturday, March 4, with an exhibition match against Barton County Community College. The start time is currently scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at McPherson High School.
