WICHITA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The No. 20-ranked McPherson College men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 5-3 victory over Newman University Sunday afternoon at Genesis West.
The Bulldogs (1-1) grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Ahmed Lahlou (Casablanca, Morocco, Groupe Scolaire Anfa) and
Hector Carrillo Perales (Barcelona, Spain, Bon Salvador) defeated Szbin Pusztay and Blake Crawford, 8-3, at the No. 1 doubles spot while
Daan Coppelmans (Waalre, The Netherlands, Sint-Joriscollege Eindhoven) and
Julien Bodin (Cartagena, Spain, Las Salinas) beat Enrique Coiras and Diego Rojo, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles. The Jets picked up the win at No. 2 doubles with Lucas Norbiato and Lauri Soome topping
Jacob Turley (Milton Keynes, England, Cedars Upper School) and
Andreas Huber (Forstinning, Germany, Franz-Marc-Gymnasium), 8-6.
In singles play, Lahlou and Bodin posted straight-set victories at No. 1 and No.5, respectively, while Turley clinched the match victory with a 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (6) win over Norbiato at No. 2 singles. Newman picked up a couple of team points with a win at No. 4 singles and a retirement at No. 3 singles. The match at No. 6 singles went unfinished.
"I was very happy with how our team competed today," said head coach
Dustin Wheeler. "Freshman stepped up big and showed up to play! We have a lot room to grow but very satisfied with our effort and energy today."
McPherson returns to the courts Saturday with a trip to Hastings, Nebraska, to face Hastings College. The Broncos (3-0) are receiving votes in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Preseason Top 25. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
