Bulldogs Shake Off Slow Start to Defeat Avila 3-1

McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson Bulldogs Volleyball team beat the Avila Eagles Tuesday night, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15. The Bulldogs move to 14-11 on the season with a 6-5 record in KCAC play.

The Bulldogs began the match somewhat lethargically, before rallying back to win some points at the end of the first set. After their uninspiring opening salvo, they came out much more locked in for the second set and jumped out to an immediate lead. The third set was back and forth and the winner was very much in doubt until the last point was tallied. The momentum firmly on their side after winning two sets in a row, the Bulldogs dominated the fourth.

The Bulldogs kills were accurate and plentiful in all sets. As a team, they had 63 to the Eagles 51. Sydney Burton (Jr. Stillwell, KS) and Riley Bradbury (Jr. Castle Rock, CO) led the Bulldogs with 18 and 20 kills respectively. Burton had a .389 hitting percentage and Bradbury had a .314. In addition to her 18 kills, Burton tallied 5 blocks which led the Bulldogs.  Late in the third set, Jamie Siess (Sr. Topeka, Kansas) dug her 25th ball of the match, which was the 2000th dig of her career. She led the team with 29 digs in the match.  Kaitlyn Heinis (Sr. Oviedo, FL) led the team with 30 assists.

"Tonight was a great win for us", said Bulldog head coach Cory Cahill. "Avila came to play and pressured us in a lot of ways. We had some big performances and the consistent improvements I am seeing from this group is exciting."

The Bulldogs play Oklahoma Wesleyan University this Saturday at 7:00 pm in McPherson. It is the Bulldogs' final regular-season game, before the match, they will honor their four seniors.
