McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson Women's basketball team lost to the Bethany College Swedes Wednesday night 62-49.
The Bulldogs started slowly and never fully rebounded. The loss moves them to 9-10 on the season and 5-8 in the KCAC.The Bulldogs were outscored 7-15 in the first quarter but outscored the Swedes 16-13 in the second, trailing 23-28 at the half. The Bulldogs finished the first half with four more field goals than the Swedes, but the Swedes made twelve more free-throws.
Deja-vu seemed to strike in the second half. The Bulldogs were doubled up in the third quarter, 17-8, but outscored the Swedes 18-17 in the fourth. The Bulldogs shot 27% from the field for the game and only hit three 3-pointers. Brittany Roberts (Jr. Mansfield, Texas) scored 18 points and tore down 14 rebounds, for her 16th double double; she also led the team with two assists.
"I thought as a whole we played better tonight," said Bulldog head coach Josh Nichols. "We are still making mistakes, but overall I loved my team's fight tonight." Nichols lauded the play of Roberts saying, "Couldn't ask much more out of Brittany, she is literally playing her guts out. Thought we had some calls go against us in the first half and Bethany was able to get to the line 20 times to our 5 attempts. That put us in a whole we never could climb out of."
The Bulldogs are next in action Saturday at 5 p.m. on the road against Tabor College.
