Sterling, Kan. – The McPherson College women's soccer team got the 2020 fall season off to a great start, going on the road in the opener, and coming home with a 2-1 win over the Sterling College Warriors.
The Bulldogs got goals in the first minute in each half, but had to hold the Warriors off down the stretch after they had trimmed the Bulldog lead in half early in the second half. Annie Weesner (So. Hutchinson, Kan.), put the Bulldogs on the board just 57 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal. Forty-five seconds after the halftime intermission concluded, Bianca Bulnes (Sr. Rancho Cordova, Calif.), scored her first goal as a Bulldog, putting the team up 2-0.
The outcome came into question when the Warriors netted a goal in the 57th minute, but the Bulldogs refocused and were able to keep them off of the scoreboard the rest of the way. Christie Silber (Sr. Simi Valley, Calif.) was in net for the Bulldogs. She faced just five shots on goal, saving four of them. The total shots for both teams were even at 17, but the Bulldogs placed six more shots on frame, forcing the Warrior net minder to come up with nine saves.
Bulldog head coach, Mark Olson was proud of his team saying, "Coaches always talk about wanting to start the games strong and on this day we definitely did that. I couldn't ask for a better start by scoring in the first minute of both halves. I'm very proud of Bianca who scored her first goal as a Bulldog. Sterling did a great job applying pressure throughout the game and I'm proud of how hard we worked in response. It's nice to be back on the pitch and as always, it's a great day to be a Bulldog."
Next Saturday, the Bulldogs will be back on the pitch taking on the Tabor College Bluejays in their home opener at Paul Family Field. Kick-off is slated for 11:30 am.
