Hastings, Neb. – The McPherson College men's and women's tennis teams kicked off their 2021 spring seasons with wins over the Hastings College Broncos. Playing indoors at the Broncos' facility in Hastings, Nebraska, both Bulldog team come away with a 7-0 win.
The Bulldog women swept the three singles matches, dropping a total of three games. The #1 team of Erica Paradise and Polina Khoroshevskaya didn't lose a game, winning 6-0, the #2 team of Kayla Ortiz and Grace Maxey won 6-1, and the #3 team of Kendra Maples and Vanessa Mundo completed the sweep, winning 6-2
In singles, the Bulldog dominance continued. Mundo was on the #1 line where she won 6-1, 6-2. Khoroshevskaya won easily 6-1, 6-0. At #3, Maxey had a tough first set, winning 6-4, but then blanked her opponent in the second to win in straight sets. At #4, Ortiz dropped one game in each set, while at #5, Maples cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win. On the #6 line, Savannah McHugh had the toughest match of the day, but she still prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.
The Bulldog men got a little tougher challenge from the Broncos than the women, but not much. Like the ladies, they started out by winning all three doubles matches. The closest match was at #1 where Jacob Turley and Martin Millos escaped with a 6-4 win. The other two teams, Julien Bodin and Michael Beltran at #2, and Jakob Komel and Trey Murphy at #3 won their matches at love.
In singles, Beltran made his Bulldog debut at #1, and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Turley slid into the #2 slot, and won a tough first set 6-4, but then ran away with the second 6-0. At #3 Nicolas Wahl cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win while on the #4 line, Millos win easily 6-2, 6-0. In the last two matches of the day, neither Komel at #5 nor Murphy at #6 lost a game.
First year head coach, Clay Allen commented on the Bulldog dominance saying, "I am excited to get that first win under our belts. It is only going to get harder from here, but I was extremely happy with what I saw in our play today!"
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Fulton, Missouri on March 6, to play a dual with the William Woods University Owls.
