Salina, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team dropped both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan University, on the road in Salina, Kansas.
The Bulldogs and Coyotes had exactly the same amount of hits in the two games, but the Coyotes were able to outscore the Bulldogs 11 to 5 in the two games. In both games, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but were unable to hold it.
The Bulldogs fell 4-2 in game one, with Raegan Kleppe collared with the loss in the circle. She pitched six innings giving up four runs on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Offensively, the Bulldogs scored two runs on seven hits, but stranded eight base runners. Both Bulldog runs came from one hit, a two run home run by Maile Deutsch, who was 2 for 4 in game one, in the first inning. Brandy Trengove also had a multi-hit game. She was also 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, and she came around to score on Deutsch's homerun.
The inability to get key hits with runners on base, plagued the Bulldogs again in game two. They had nine hits, the same as the Coyotes, but were only able to plate three runs, while KWU put seven up on the scoreboard. Deutch continued to do her part at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and two more runs driven in. Aubree Beggs also recorded multiple hits going 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Brittany Baroni got the start in the circle and was credited with the loss. She went two and a third giving up three runs on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Shelby Bonn and Katy Wilson pitched the final three and two-thirds, each giving up two runs. Bonn finished with two strikeouts and no walks, while Wilson had one of each.
"We played with good effort just couldn't find any timely hits," commented Bulldog head coach Tony Segovia. "We will continue to work and get better every day."
With the losses, the Bulldogs fall to 10-12 overall, and 3-5 in KCAC play. They will try and get back on track on Thursday when they host the Friends University Falcons out at Bulldog Park. First pitch of the doubleheader Thursday is slated for 2:00 pm.
