Topeka, Kan. – The McPherson College women's tennis team began its run to a conference championship with a 4-0 win over Friends University in the quarterfinals of the KCAC tournament held at Kossover Tennis Complex in Topeka, Kan.
In the conference tournament matches are played to decision rather than to completion. In doubles as soon as one team wins two matches to secure the doubles point, the final match is ended even if it hasn't been completed. Then once a team reaches four points, the match is called regardless of where the score is in the other matches still on court.
The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in doubles, winning at #2 and #3. Erica Paradise and Grace Maxey got the Bulldogs on the board winning 6-3 at #2. Shortly thereafter, Vanessa Mundo and Kendra Maples clinced the doubles point for the Bulldogs winning their match at #3 6-4. At #1, Polina Khoroshevskaya and Kayla Oritz were up 5-3 and had match point when the point was secured.
The Bulldogs kept things rolling in singles. Paradise put the Bulldogs up 2-0 making quick work of her opponent at #3, 6-0, 6-1. Moments later, Khoroshevkaya won her match 6-1, 6-0 to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. The clincher came on the #6 line. Maples dominated her match winning 1 & 1. The other three matches go in the books as unfinished, but the Bulldogs were up a set in all of them.

Coach Allen was pleased with how the Bulldog women opened the tournament. He commented, "We got a good battle from Friends today. They played some solid doubles points with us, but in the end we won the important points we needed. We then used that to run through singles, leading on all six court, and winning the three we needed. Now we are looking forward to Southwestern, a team that have had some good battles with over the years."
As Coach Allen alluded to, the Bulldogs will get the Southwestern College Moundbuilders in the semifinals tomorrow. That match is slated to start at 2:00 pm.
