Bulldogs Sweep OKWU at Home

Article by Natalia Ahrens

McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College Bulldogs hosted the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles in a 3-game series at Bulldog Park over the weekend. The Bulldogs swept the Eagles, winning the series 3-0.

In Saturday's game two and game three action, there were brisk 20-30 mph winds throughout both games, blowing south, directly to left field, and in result, there were many home runs produced by the Bulldogs in both games two and three.

Game 2 was a lot different from what was seen yesterday, as these games were not pitchers duels, and were full of scoring runs and plays. Starting on the mound for the Bulldogs to begin game 2 was senior Blake Maddock, who pitched 5.2 innings, and picked up the win for the Bulldogs. He allowed 3 runs off of 9 hits in the first 5, then the Bulldogs brought in other pitchers, such as Jace Mapston, Isaiah Vazquez, Noah Carpenter, Rolando Fletes, and to finish the game, Justin Lockey. Vasquez only allowed 1 hit and 1 run, and all of the other pitchers held up with 0's.

Offensively, the Bulldogs had 3-homeruns, hit by Trevor Johnson, Hunter Robinson, and Kevinn Castillo, who all put up one. There were 8 Bulldogs in game 2 that recorded hits, and there were 3 that recorded 2 hits, Johnson, Castillo, and Jake Pearson.
The Bulldogs took game 2, 9-4.

In Game 3, there were still very heavy winds going towards left field, many more home runs were seen.

In the first inning, the Eagles put up 5 runs at their first at bat, but nonetheless, the Bulldogs responded fiercely. Home Runs hit by Johnson and Caleb Feuerstak, and fast base running resulted in the Bulldogs putting up 9 runs in the first inning, and at the end of the 1st, the score was 9-4, Bulldogs.

Offensively, Gage Ninness and Feuerstak both recorded 4 hits off of 5 and 4 at bats, respectively. Feuerstak; Johnson; Tony Hyrnkiw all recorded home runs in game 2, and there were 9 Bulldogs that got hits, and 5 that had more than 1.

Starting on the mound in game 2 for the Bulldogs was Jacob Gilcrease, however, he only pitched 1 inning, then Zach Reynolds came in. Reynolds was credited with the win, pitching 2.1 innings. Other pitchers for the Bulldogs today were Alex Amaral, Liam Spaw, Robbie Schmidt, Darby Gilbert, and Broc Selstrom. The tough conditions caused the Bulldogs to struggle more in this game, allowing 14 runs overall. The final score of game 3 was 17-14.

Coach Kyle MacKinnon had to say this about the Bulldog's weekend series, "A wild weekend of extremes for us. Pitchers duel in game 1, with a great bounce back start from Escobar. Game 2 we had another great outing from Maddock, with the pen stepped up in big spots in both games. Game 3 was a wild one. Down 5 in inning one, to rebound with a 9 spot in bottom of the first, shows we can win in a multitude of ways. Great weekend overall!"

The Bulldogs now move to 29-8 overall, and 18-4 in the KCAC. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday April 12 at 1:00pm, versus the Tabor Bluejays at Bulldog Park.
