Bulldogs Split with Southwestern on Day 1

Winfield, Kan. – Going on the road for the final time in the KCAC regular season, the McPherson College baseball team travelled to play the Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Friday for games one and two of a three game series. The Bulldogs and Builders split the first two games with the home team taking game one, 4-2, but game two going to the Bulldogs 8-1.

On the mound for the Bulldogs in game one was Alex Escobar, who suffered his first loss of the season. He didn't pitch poorly but just didn't get the run support from his offense that he is usually afforded. He worked six innings, charged with four runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Robbie Schmidt came out of the pen to pitch the final two innings, holding the Builders scoreless on just one hit and a pair of strikeouts.

The Bulldog offense was held to just two runs on seven hits. Two of the hits were doubles by Trevor Johnson and Jake Pearson. Pearson and Caleb Feuerstake recorded multiple hits, both going 2 for 4.

In game two, the Bulldogs rediscovered their form, and bounced back with an 8-1 win. Feuerstake continued to see the ball well, this time going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two more driven in. He also swiped a base, breaking the Bulldogs' single season stolen base record. Johnson also had three more hits in game two including another double.

On the mound, Isaiah Vazquez got the start, and picked up the win, moving his record to 4-0 on the season. He worked four scoreless innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. After Vazquez, the Bulldogs went to the bull pen brining in Rolando Fletes and Zach Reynolds to pitch the final three innings.

With the split, the Bulldogs move to 34-10 on the season, and 23-6 in KCAC games. With the possibility of weather on Saturday, game three of the series has been moved to Sunday at 1:00 pm.
