McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson College Bulldogs notched their second consecutive doubleheader sweep Saturday (Feb. 25), knocking off the William Penn University Statesmen 3-1 and 7-0 at Bulldog Park.
The opener was a pitching duel until the Statesmen broke through for the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning.
But Summer Garcia put the Bulldogs on top for good with a three-run blast over the right field wall.
Raegan Kleppe sealed the deal with a three-up-three-down inning in the top of the seventh, to notch her second win of the season. In her third complete game of the season, she struck out five batters.
"Our pitchers did a good job of working ahead and hitting spots today," head coach Abby Bolton said. "The defense did a good job of making routine plays, and I was proud of our hitters for executing our game plan at the plate. Overall, it was a good total team effort.
The Bulldogs rode that momentum into the nightcap, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jordyn Johnson got the call in the circle and shine, tying her career-high with seven strikeouts while notching her second career shutout.
The Bulldogs kept producing on offense, adding one more in the third when Lacy Weaver singled down the left field line to bring home Mackenzie Egan.
They added four more in the fourth, thanks to an RBI single by Lauren Skinner and a sacrifice fly by Kassidy New.
The Bulldogs are back in action next weekend in Oklahoma City, Okla. at the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic. Their first matchups will be Friday (Mar. 3) against Mid America Christian and Huston-Tillotson.
