McPHERSON, Kan. — Sammy Grim gave McPherson College a 5-4 walk-off victory with an RBI single to left field in game one of a three-game set over Avila University at Bulldog Park.
Blake Maddock tied the school record for strikeouts in a game set by Darby Gilbert earlier this season, fanning 12 batters in 6.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 after a two-run blast in the top of the eighth by Avila's Kurt Trotter. That's when the comeback bid began, thanks to a pair of sacrifice flies by Hayden Foster and Antonio Fernandez in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
Noah Miller struck out back-to-back batters after allowing a lead-off walk, but the Eagles loaded the bases. Broc Selstrom came on in relief and struck out Reyes Willis to keep the score tied heading into the next half-inning.
Kevinn Castillo reached on an error and then advanced to second on a ground ball to the shortstop setting the stage for the Grim single.
The Bulldogs (26-12, 19-5 KCAC) scored five runs on 14 hits while benefiting from a pair of Avila errors. Five Bulldogs finished with two hits.
The teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday (Apr. 16) with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Bulldog Park.
