Walters Plays Hero, Baseball Upsets No. 22 Ottawa With Walkoff Win

McPHERSON, Kan. — In a game full of offense, the Bulldogs came out on top over the Ottawa University Braves on Tuesday (Mar. 18) off a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning.

After surrendering an early 7-3 lead, the Bulldogs were able to bounce back and retake the lead in the eighth inning. The Braves responded quicky in the top half of the ninth with a pair runs to tie the game back up at 14 runs apiece. Down to their final out in the bottom half of the ninth inning, Dawson Walters stepped up and launched a ball over the center field wall for a walkoff homerun and give the Bulldogs a massive 15-14 victory and secure MC's fourth victory over a ranked opponent this year.

After a scoreless first inning of play, the Bulldogs started the offense as Colin Evers extended his hit streak to 14 games with an RBI double and Marcus Patton secured an RBI single to make it a 2-0 lead for MC. Another pair of zeros in the run column in the third and fourth innings for Ottawa thanks to some strong pitching from Jameson Caro opened the door for MC to extend their lead and the bat of Luke Nordean did just that in the bottom half of the fourth inning as he launched a two run homerun to make it a 4-0.

Ottawa was able to break through in the fifth inning with a pair of RBI singles that scored a trio of runs to cut the lead to just one run, but Evers continued his unreal hot streak with a three run homerun to immediately push the lead back out to four runs. The tone of the game completely changed in the top of the sixth inning as Ottawa pushed across eight runs to go from down 7-3 to now leading 11-7.

Now chasing the Braves, the Bulldogs were able to cut the lead won to just one run in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings thanks to mistakes by the Ottawa fielders and a Peyton Starr RBI single. A solo shot by Ottawa in the top of the eighth inning made it a 12-10 lead for the Braves heading into the final two frames of play.

The Bulldogs start a three game road series against the Bethany College Swedes on Friday, March 22 with a single game prior to a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
