Baseball Falls Just Short of Miraculous Comeback Against Friends

McPHERSON, Kan. — The Bulldogs fell just short of completing what would have been one of the best come from behind victories of the year on Saturday (Apr. 19) as they dropped the series finale to the Friends University Falcons, 6-4.

The Bulldogs were able to strike first in the second inning with some small ball as Koen Gakstatter secured an RBI despite grounding out as he gave MC the early 1-0 lead. After being held scoreless through three innings of play, the Falcons kickstarted what turned into six unanswered runs in the fourth inning as a leadoff solo homerun and a two run RBI double gave Friends a 3-1 lead.

It continued to be all Falcons as they pushed across runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to grow the lead out to 6-1 and the pitching staff kept the typically potent MC offense was held to just four hits and the lone run for most of the contest.

Come the ninth inning, things began to shift as the Bulldogs began to work the count and get guys on base. Luke Nordean came up big with runners on second and first as he lined a ball into center field to bring home Marcus Patton to push across a run and make it 6-2. After Marcus Burton was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dalton Thomas pushed a ball into the right center field gap to score two more runs and make it a 6-4 game.

MC loaded the bases up again and had the big bat of Peyton Starr up to hit, but one more fantastic play by the Friends defense ended the comeback and secured the victory for the Falcons. The win for Friends snaps a 17 game losing streak the Falcons had against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will play one final game at Bulldogs Park on Wednesday, April 23 as they play host to the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
