Bulldogs hope to right ship against Tabor, Ottawa

The Matchup
Entering the week off a loss at the University of Saint Mary, the McPherson College women’s soccer program looks to right the ship as the Bulldogs travel to Tabor College before returning home to play Ottawa University. MC squares off against the Blue Jays on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and play Ottawa at 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening at McPherson Stadium. Live stats will be available for both of the week’s matches.

The Bulldogs (3-5-1, 0-1-0) are currently riding a four match winless streak after falling in their KCAC opener, 3-2, at the University of Saint Mary last Saturday afternoon in Leavenworth, Kan. McPherson scored both goals in the final 26 minutes of the match after USM had taken a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs outshot the Spires 18-10, including eight shots on goal.

Seniors Amanda Aragon and Haley Cook continue to lead the McPherson offensive attack. The duo has accounted for six of the Bulldogs 12 goals on the season, including a team-leading four from Aragon. Cook leads the team with three assists, while notching two goals. Both players have started all nine matches for McPherson on the season.

Sophomore Molly Whitwell continues to be the primary goalkeeper for the Bulldogs. On the year, Whitwell has registered 54 saves in nine matches and owns a 2.01 goals against average.

Following Ottawa, McPherson is home for a pair of KCAC contests against Bethel College (Oct. 13) and Friends University (Oct. 16).

Last week for the Bulldogs
McPherson finished last week with a 0-1-0 mark after dropping its KCAC regular season opener against the University of Saint Mary, 3-2.

The Spires came out as the aggressors, scoring three goals in the first 61 minutes of the match. The Bulldogs finally broke through in the 64th minute when forward Haley Cook notched her second goal of the season. McPherson would add another in the 87th when Ana Calderon dribbled the length of the field before beating the USM goalkeeper to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

Despite the momentum, the Bulldogs failed to tie the score.

With the loss, McPherson dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in KCAC play, while the Spires improve to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Scouting Tabor
The Blue Jays (0-8-2, 0-0-1) enter the midweek matchup with high hopes after ending an eight match losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Sterling College last Saturday. Defender Dayna Wohlgemuth scored the Jays lone goal in the 70th minute after the Blue Jays conceded a point just six minutes earlier. The score marks Wohlgemuth’s first career goal.

On the year, Tabor has struggled finding the back of the net. They have been outscored by their opponents 37-4 on the season including a stretch of five matches in which TC was shutout.

Freshman forward Megan Beals leads the team with three points on three assists. Four different Blue Jays have combined to score the team’s four goals, including Wohlgemuth, Molly Clark, Adria Whitehorn and Victoria Cantu.

Tabor’s struggles have not only been on the offensive side of the pitch. As a team, the Blue Jays have a 3.60 goals against average. Freshman Chelsea Brown has been the primary goalkeeper for TC and owns a 3.80 goals against average and .750 save percentage.

Scouting Ottawa
Ottawa (6-2-2, 1-0-0) enters the week as just one of two KCAC schools with a winning overall record and are coming off an easy 3-0 victory against Bethel College. Against the Threshers, the Lady Braves tallied 32 shots, including 14 on goals, while holding BC to just five total shots. On the season, OU has outscored its opponents 26-12, while outshooting them 208-110.

The Lady Brave offense is led by the three-headed monster of Amanda Talbott, Whitney Bowen and Kelsey Hanna. The trio ranks third, fourth, and fifth in the KCAC in total points and points per game, while Talbott is tied for second in the KCAC with six goals. Bowen and Hanna are tied with each other in fourth place with five, respectively. On the year, Talbott leads the team with 16 points on six goals and two assists.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Lauren Peil has been nothing but a wall, registering a KCAC best 1.18 goals against average in eight matches this season. On the year, she has recorded 22 saves in 533:52 minutes of action. Senior Nichole Bishop, who has seen time in six matches, including four starts, has tallied 19 saves and owns a 1.20 goals against average on the season.
