Bulldogs travel to Bethany for first round of KCAC Tournament

KCAC Tournament Bracket

McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s soccer team travels to Lindsborg, Kan. this Saturday for the opening round of the KCAC Men’s Soccer Postseason Tournament. The No. 5 Bulldogs (8-8-1, 5-4-0) will face No. 4 Bethany College (6-9-2, 5-3-1) at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Stadium. The winner will take on No. 1 Kansas Wesleyan University in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Salina Stadium at 12:00 p.m.

McPherson is attempting to win its third consecutive KCAC title, but will need to make a run through the conference tournament to do so. The Bulldogs enter postseason play 2-3 in its last five matches, including a recent loss at Kansas Wesleyan University, 4-0.

Earlier this week, four Bulldogs received All-KCAC honors including senior forward Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.), junior defender Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas), sophomore midfielder Michael Phillips (Midland, Texas) and junior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas). Mulford, Tank and Phillips represented MC on the first team, while Jett was named to the honorable mention squad. The announcement marked the second award of the week for Tank, as he was named to the ESPN-CoSIDA District VII Academic All-American Second Team.

Mulford enters the weekend as the Bulldog most prolific scorer with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists. Last week against Southwestern, Mulford recorded his first career hat trick to propel MC to a 5-0 victory. He currently ranks seventh in the NAIA in shots per game (4.67) and ninth in shots on goal per game (2.53).

If the Bulldogs knock off Bethany they will travel to rival Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Nov.
10. Semifinal kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Salina Stadium in Salina, Kan. The last time these two sides met Kansas Wesleyan knocked off the Bulldogs 4-0.

Scouting Bethany
Bethany (6-9-2, 5-3-1) enters the weekend 4-0-1 in their last five matches, including wins against Friends, Sterling, McPherson and Tabor. All four matches were decided by one goal.

The Swede offense is led by All-KCAC performer John Nuthall. Nuthall leads Bethany in all offensive categories, including a team-best 23 points on nine goals and five assists. Gildardo Navarro has been the Swedes secondary threat, as the second team All-KCAC award winner has six goals on the season.

Defensively, goalkeeper Adam Logan has started 13-of-17 games between the pipes and owns a 1.91 goals against average and .754 save percentage. He has tallied four shutouts en route to his 6-9-2 record.

Head coach Jeff Kid is in his fourth season at the helm of the Bethany soccer program.
