Men’s tennis topples Coyotes, 7-2

McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team finished up the regular season by defeating Kansas Wesleyan, 7-2, Monday afternoon at the McPherson City Courts.

McPherson opened the afternoon winning five of six singles matches and won two of three doubles to improve to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in KCAC play. The victory propelled McPherson to fourth place in the conference and the team’s first appearance in the KCAC Tournament since they reinstated the program in 2006.

In singles, Vyacheslav Bukatin dropped the first set, 6-4, to Mark Barlett at the No. 1 position before coming back to win the next two, 6-2, 6-1. The rest of the men won their matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the McPherson tandem of Ronaldo Filho and Igor Guasti extended their win streak to five matches with a victory over Mark Barlett and Christian Cruz, 8-3, at the No 1 position. Senior Nathan Clary and partner, sophomore, Kyle Toland picked up the other doubles win for McPherson, 8-3, over Luis Loper and Sean Welcher.

The Bulldogs gear up for the KCAC Championships, May 7-8 in Salina, Kan., with the KCAC Individual Tournament on April 30 in McPherson. The event is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. in various sites within McPherson.
