The McPherson College women’s soccer team opens its 2010 season this Wednesday night against Concordia University (Neb.). The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. CST from McPherson Stadium in McPherson, Kan. A link to Live Stats will be available at www. macbulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 10-5-3 mark in 2009, along with a 6-1-2 record in KCAC play. McPherson returns six starters from a year ago, including senior forward Haley Cook. Cook led MC in goals and points a year ago.
There is a wealth of optimism surrounding the 2010 season, and with good reason, as the Bulldogs were selected second in the preseason KCAC poll. The team returns a strong presence at the forward position with the addition of athletic freshman and consistent returners. In two scrimmage matches McPherson scored eight goals.
A few questions surround McPherson’s defensive backline, mostly due to its youth. However a group of talented newcomers look to silence critics and continue the dominate play shown during fall camp.
Recapping Last Week
McPherson finished out fall camp with scrimmages against Allen County Community College and a group of program alumni. The Bulldogs thumped the Red Devils, 6-0, while scoring a pair of goals late in the second half against the alumni squad for a 2-1 win. Despite a few bumps and bruises, McPherson finished fall camp looking healthy. The Bulldogs enter the 2010 campaign with high expectations and plan to be in contention for a KCAC Championship come late October
Scouting Concordia
The Bulldogs (1-0-0) won their season opener last weekend against York College, 5-1, behind a pair of goals from forward Jamie Sanchez. The junior is a transfer from the University of Nebraska. CU’s three other goals came from Kaela Geyer, Jordan Donohoue and Mallorie Blanck. The Bulldogs dominated possession, outshooting York 31-2, including 15 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ariel Harris played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal, while recording one save.
In addition to Sanchez, CU returns first team All-GPAC selection Carolyn Chrzan. Chrzan led the Bulldogs with 10 goals and 25 points a year ago. Other All-GPAC honorees include defensive midfielder Sarah Hoffmann. Hoffmann anchored the Concordia backline during the 2009 season, earning second team honors.
Head coach Lisa White is in her first season with Concordia University. She has guided the Bulldogs to a 1-0-0 record during her brief tenure with the Bulldogs.
Series Breakdown
McPherson and Concordia have met twice on the pitch in recent history. McPherson is 0-1-1 against CU, including a 1-1 draw against the Bulldogs last season. An Amanda Aragon goal in the 80th minute put McPherson up, 1-0, but Concordia answered back less than a minute later with one of their own to tie the score. In their only other meeting Concordia defeated McPherson, 6-0.
