The Matchup
Riding the momentum of its first win of the season, the McPherson College women’s soccer team continues its battle with the Great Plains Athletic Conference and Briar Cliff University Saturday evening at McPherson Stadium. Live stats for the match will be available on www.macbulldogs.com.

The Bulldogs (1-1-1) defeated Manhattan Christian, 1-0 last Wednesday at McPherson Stadium for the team’s first victory of the season. Senior Amanda Aragon netted MC’s lone goal, her second of the season, in the 50th minute to propel the team to the 1-0 win. McPherson dominated possession, taking a season-high 23 shots, including seven on frame, while the Crusaders tallied only seven. Despite the lopsided possession, the Bulldogs committed 19 fouls in the contest.

Prior to Manhattan Christian, McPherson drew with the University of Sioux Falls and lost to Concordia University.

Following this weekend, the Bulldogs finish their five-game home stand with a match against cross-town rival Central Christian College. McPherson hosts Central on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Last week for the Bulldogs
McPherson went 0-1-1 last week in home matches against Concordia University and the University of Sioux Falls. In Saturday’s draw, MC’s Kourtney Mitchell received a clearing ball from Brittany Coxsey and dribbled nearly 60 yards before beating the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. Mitchell’s goal tied the score after McPherson found themselves trailing 2-0 following the first half. McPherson tallied seven shots against the USF defense.

In Wednesday’s loss to Concordia, CU’s Jamie Sanchez notched a pair of first half goals, including a rebound in the final seconds of the first half to propel the Bulldogs to the 2-1 win. Senior Amanda Aragon recorded MC’s lone goal in the 11th minute. CU outshot McPherson 17-9.

Scouting Briar Cliff

Briar Cliff (0-2-0) is seeking its first win of 2010. The Chargers have played just two matches so far this season, both losses against Mount Mercy University and Bellevue University. BCU has allowed 11 goals in two games, while scoring only one.

Briar Cliff finished 2009 with a 5-10-2 overall record and 3-7-2 in conference play. Despite their record, Briar Cliff ended the season on a positive note with a 5-2 win over Mount Marty College. The victory matched BCU’s largest margin of victory for the season. The Chargers lost nine seniors from a year ago, including honorable mention All-GPAC selections Rachelle Travis and Ashley Wehle. Wehle led the team with 17 points on five goals and seven assists.

Head coach Pat Herbst (Briar Cliff, 1996) is in his third year as the men’s coach and first season at the helm of the women’s program. Prior to Briar Cliff, Herbst spent six years at Clarke College, where he guided the women’s team to two conference championships and was named NICC “Coach of the Year” twice.
