Women’s Soccer Wraps up Regular Season with Southwestern and Kansas Wesleyan

The McPherson College women’s soccer team wraps up the regular season portion of its 2011 schedule this week with matches against Southwestern College and Kansas Wesleyan University. The Bulldogs kickoff of the week Wednesday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Southwestern for a 5 p.m. (CST) kickoff with the Builders, before closing the season at home against Kansas Wesleyan University at 12:30 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
 
The Bulldogs (8-7-1, 5-1-1 KCAC) are riding a three-match win streak, including a pair of shutout victories against Sterling College (1-0) and Bethany College (3-0) last week. Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Verdieck (New Castle, Colo.) has stepped up since replacing Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) in goal following MC’s 0-0 draw at Ottawa University. Since becoming the starter, Verdieck has allowed two goals in four matches and owns a 3-1 overall record between the pipes. She earned KCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her play against Sterling and Bethany.
 
In addition to the defense, the McPherson offense has found its stride with nine goals in their last three matches, including a season-best five goals at Friends University on Oct. 15. Freshman forward Geneva Gray (Littleton, Colo.) paces the team in scoring with seven goals, while fellow freshman Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has five, respectively.
 
Southwestern enters the midweek matchup fourth in the conference standings with an 8-6-1 overall record and 4-3-0 conference mark. The Builders have lost two straight, including a 4-0 decision at Kansas Wesleyan University last Saturday. SWC wraps up the regular season with home matches against McPherson and the University of Saint Mary.
 
The No. 20 Coyotes remain unbeaten in conference with a 7-0-0 record and a 14-1-1 overall mark. KWU’s last defeat came on Sept. 16 when they fell, 5-1, at Westminster College (Utah). Kansas Wesleyan has shutout six-of-seven KCAC opponents and is yet to be held to less than four goals in a conference match. KWU hosts Ottawa University Wednesday night before traveling to McPherson on Saturday.
 
Noting Southwestern
  • The Builders enter Wednesday’s game with a 4-3-0 KCAC record and currently rest in fourth place in the KCAC standings.
  • Southwestern is currently on a two-match losing streak where they have been outscored 12-0.
  • Prior to the streak, the Builders had won four straight, including shutouts of Sterling College (2-0) and Bethel College (1-0).
  • Kaci Hutchinson leads the team with five goals. She is the only Builder with more than two.
  • Goalkeeper Sarah Walsh is allowing 2.43 goals per game, but has three shutouts on the season. Additionally, she owns a .724 save percentage.
  • SWC is coached by Joe Wood and assisted by Mike Daniels
 
Noting Kansas Wesleyan
  • Kansas Wesleyan has finished amongst to top two in conference all of the past seven years, including regular season championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
  • The Coyotes enter the week 14-1-1 overall with their only loss coming at Westminster (Utah), 5-1, on Sept. 16.
  • KWU has outscored conference opponents 35-1
  •  Five Coyotes have at least five goals this season with Monique Orocio leading the way with 11.
  • Hannah Kern leads the squad with seven assists on the year
  • Goalkeepers Karina Albarran and Amanda Radich have split time this season. Albarran owns a 9-0-0 record and three shutouts, while Radich is 3-1-1 with two shutouts of her own.
  • As a team, KWU enters the week ranked ninth nationally in total goals (53) and 10th in goals per game (3.310).
