Whitney Smith (South Jordan, Utah) was recently named to the 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, in a recent announcement by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national office. The announcement was named in conjunction with the 2011 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships in Decatur, Ala.
Smith, a native of South Jordan, Utah, played a key role in a Bulldog defense that held opponents to a 1.38 goals against average and posted nine shutouts. In addition to receiving the NAIA award, Smith was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) earlier this fall, while also garnering All-KCAC second team honors. Individually, Smith concluded the season with two goals in 20 matches.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be nominated by their institution’s head coach, must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status.
In all, 485 student-athletes earned the honor in women’s soccer, including 26 individuals from the KCAC.
McPherson finished the 2011 season with a 10-9-1 overall record.
