McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s and women’s tennis teams started off their week with a win over Central Christian College Thursday evening at the McPherson High School Tennis Center. The Bulldog women defeated the Tigers, 8-1, while the men’s knocked off Central, 5-4.
With the wins, both McPherson squads improve to 1-1 on the season.
The women kicked off the match with a sweep of the double matches, including a 9-7 victory by junior Wrylie Finkle (Wichita, Kan.) and Madalen Jackle (Liberal, Kan.) at the No. 1 position.
The Bulldogs took the No. 2 through No. 6 singles spots without surrendering more than two games in any set, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep by Jackle at the No. 2. Central’s lone point came in No. 1 singles as Kristen Reith knocked off Finkle 6-0, 7-5.
On the men’s side, the Bulldogs earned two points out of the doubles matches as No. 2 partners Vyacheslav Bukatin (Moscow, Russia) and Thiago Da Silva defeated Jeff Szolis and Ivory Washington 8-3 and Kyle Toland (Edwardsville, Kan.) and Cody Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won, 8-5, at No. 3.
In singles play, the Bulldogs won three of six matches to earn the victory. Winning for the Bulldogs was No. 1 Bukatin, who defeated Mark Gayer, 6-3, 6-2. Ronaldo Filho (San Paulo, Brazil) defeated Dylon Neal, 6-0, 6-3. Filho was playing in the No. 2 spot for the Bulldogs. MC’s final point came from No. 3 Da Silva, who defeated Szolis, 6-0, 6-1.
McPherson returns to action on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Arkansas City, Kan. to face Cowley County Community College. The first matches scheduled to start 10:00 a.m.
