McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College baseball team dropped both ends of a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the University of Saint Mary. The Bulldogs were defeated in game one by a 24-7 score before the visiting Spires rolled to a 23-0 victory in game two.
McPherson slips to 0-24 overall and 0-16 in KCAC play, while USM improves to 11-26 on the season and 4-10 in league action.
Trailing 15-0 in the third, McPherson lit the scoreboard when freshman Daxton Deal (Abilene, Texas) belted a grand slam on a letter-high fastball. The grand slam is the first of his career and the first since McPherson implemented in the program last fall. Freshman second baseman Chace Evans (White Oak, Texas) followed Deal’s example with a solo shot just two pitches later to cut the deficit to 15-5.
However, USM answered with nine runs in their next two at bats en route to the victory. The Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the fifth on a freshman designated hitter Chris Cesario (Mansfield, Texas) single that scored Deal and Evans.
McPherson managed just two hits in game two, which came in the bottom of the second on a Matt Dixon (Coffeyville, Kan.) single to right field and a Jacob O'Neal (Cleveland, Okla.) single up the middle.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they travel to Leavenworth, Kan. to wrap up the four games series with the Spires. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
