McPherson, Kan.
– Morningside College tallied three unanswered goals, as the McPherson College women’s soccer team fell, 3-1, to the Mustangs Sunday afternoon at McPherson Stadium.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-3-0 overall and are winless in their last three. Morningside improved to 5-0-0 on the year.

Junior forward Rachael Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a shot that bounced out of the goalkeepers grasp and into the back of the net. The goal is her first of the season and fifth of her career.

Despite the goal, momentum swung to the Mustangs as they began pushing forward and controlling possession in the Bulldogs defensive third. Morningside notched their first of three goals in the 28th minute when Maggie Kukuk drove a ball far post from approximately 15 yards out.

The Mustangs scored the eventual game winner about a minute later when Kathryn Sorenson headed home a ball that slipped out of McPherson goalkeeper Molly Whitwell's (Plano, Texas) hands to take a 2-1 lead. Morningside struck for the final time in the 53rd minute on Kukuk’s second goal of the match.

Offensively, Morningside held a 21-5 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. Four of MC’s five shots were on goal.

Rachael Cornell and Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ended the contest with two goals apiece. Whitwell played all 90 minutes in goal, recording eight saves.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Manhattan Christian College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CST) in Manhattan, Kan.
