Manhattan, Kan. – Six different Bulldogs scored goals, including two from junior Juan Garcia, as the McPherson College men’s soccer team cruised to a 7-1 victory on Wednesday evening at Manhattan Christian College. The victory is the second straight for McPherson.
The victory improves the Bulldogs to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Crusaders fall to 1-3-0 overall.
McPherson dominated possession the entire night, outshooting Manhattan Christian 33-9, including 17 shots on goal. The Bulldogs also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior midfielder Jared Kientz (Derby, Kan.) headed home the opening goal in the 19th minute to give MC the early, 1-0 advantage. Freshman Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas) served a free kick from just outside the penalty area to the far corner of the goal to assist Kientz’s goal.
McPherson took a 2-0 lead 17 minutes later as Kientz played a ball across the six-yard box that found the foot of Juan Garcia (Reno, Nev.) who slotted it past the diving goalkeeper. Manhattan Christian countered quickly following the MC goal, but senior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) held off the attack with a lunging save that punched the Crusader strike over the crossbar.
The Bulldogs continued the pressure in the second period, striking a third time when junior Michael Phillips (Spring Branch, Texas) sent a cross through the penalty box, which was punched back into the six-yard box by Juan Garcia before finding the left foot of junior Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) for his second goal of the season. Juan Garcia scored his second goal on the night three minutes later to provide MC a 4-0 lead.
Manhattan Christian would ruin Jett’s clean sheet attempt in the 75th minute on a Nathan Love penalty kick following a foul by the Bulldog defense.
However, the Bulldogs answered with three additional goals to close the match. Senior Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas) scored in the 76th minute, while Tarek Khalidi (Augusta, Kan.) notched one in the 88th and Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) closed the match with another in the final seconds.
Junior Sam Tucker (Thornton, Colo.), Juan Garcia, freshman Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) and Heriberto Garcia tallied four shots apiece, while Garcia led MC with three shots on goal. Jett picked up his third win of the season with three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Zack Watkins led MCC with five shots, including one on frame. Ricky Wiseman played all 90 minutes in goal for the Crusaders.
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Mid-America Christian University at 4 p.m. (CST). A video stream of the contest will be available at www.macbulldogs.com
