McPherson, Kan. – Julia Nimal’s goal with less than 15 minutes to play lifted Mid-American to a 2-1 victory over the McPherson College women’s soccer team Saturday afternoon at McPherson Stadium.
With the loss, McPherson falls to 2-4-0 overall on the season, while the Evangels improve to 5-1-0.
McPherson got on the board in the 32nd minute with a goal from junior forward Rachael Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The score is her second of the season and second in the last three matches. Freshman midfield Haley Anderson (Highland Village, Texas) was awarded an assist on the play.
The two defenses held strong though the remainder of the half as each squad recorded five shots with three on goal.
However, Mid-America Christian pulled even in the first four minutes of the second period on Nimal’s first of two goals. She struck again in the 78th minute to propel MACU to the 2-1 victory.
Mid-America Christian held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Additionally, the Evangels took five corner kicks, while holding the Bulldogs to none.
Offensively, junior Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) and freshman Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who recorded two shots apiece, led McPherson. Junior goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) tallied 10 saves in 90 minutes in goal.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Fort Hays State University for an 8 p.m. kickoff against the Tigers. The matchup is the third NCAA Division II opponent MC has faced this season.
