Track & Field Opens 2012 Indoor Season at Highland Open

Twelve top five finishes, including a provisional national qualifying mark in the men’s high jump from Derrick Toney (Salinas, Calif.), highlighted the event, as the McPherson College indoor track and field team kicked off their season at the Highland Open on Saturday. The event was hosted by Highland Community College.
 
Toney, who earned indoor All-American honors a year ago, potentially punched his ticket to his second straight NAIA Indoor Championship with leap of 2.00m, which earned him a second place finish in the high jump. Additionally, he claimed a fifth place in the men’s 400-meter run with a time of 55.79.
 
Another Bulldog with national meet experience, David Parry (Morganville, Kan.), had a good showing in the 500-meters. Parry covered the track in 1:11.03 to take second place.
 
Other notable finishers for the MC men included a second place finish by John Goodwin (Captain, N.M.) in the 55-meter dash (8.36) and third place finishes by Jason Amador (San Bernardino, Calif.) in the 400-meters (54.71) and Evan Clary (McPherson, Kan.) in the weight throw (12.95m). Amador also took fourth place in the 200-meters with a time of 24.07.
 
On the women’s side, Ashley Huizar (LaPuente, Calif.) and Megan Pohlmann (Deshler, Neb.) each claimed individual championships. Huizar won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:37.18, which was almost a minute faster than second place, while Pohlman claimed the weight throw crown with a toss of 12.85m.
 
Bulldog newcomer Cathy Lowry (Falcon, Colo.) had a solid day with a fourth place finish in the 200-meters (28.40) and a fifth place in the 55-meter dash (7.51).
 
Aspen Frey (Newton, Kan.) rounded out MC’s top finishers, earning four place in the 800-meters in 2:41.49.
 
McPherson next competes at the Nebraska Wesleyan Open on Feb. 4 in Lincoln, Neb.
