McPherson, Kan. – The senior soccer players were super on Saturday as they were responsible for four of the team’s six goals in McPherson’s shutout of KCAC’s last place Southwestern College. This all but solidifies MC’s fourth place standings in the conference rankings with their 5-3 KCAC record; the Bulldogs are 10-5-1 for the season.
It was only fitting for a senior to score what turned out to be the game winning goal on an assist from another senior on “Senior Night.” Christian Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.)tapped in the game’s first goal eight minutes into play on a nice cross from Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.), giving Rodriguez three goals for the week. After that goal, the Southwestern defense perked up and held McPherson scoreless for the remainder of the half, leaving a very frustrated pack of Bulldogs hungry for the second period.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) put a pass from Oscar Cortez past the SWC keeper for their second goal. Less than one minute later, senior Sebastian Toro (Granada Hills, Calif.) got his shot past the goalie, making it 3-0 McPherson. The Bulldogs weren’t done, as in the 64th minute Nuthall got his second goal of the match, moving it to a 4-0 MC advantage. It took nearly 20 minutes but McPherson scored again as a couple of slick passes from Walsh and Toro gave fellow senior Sam Tucker (Thornton, Colo.) his second goal of the season. Walsh finished off the scoring for MC as he blasted in a rebounded shot in the 84th minute, giving the Bulldogs a comfortable 6-0 victory.
A remarkable 45 shots were taken by McPherson, 16 of those made it on target. Walsh put up an unprecedented 11, having five on frame. He was followed by Nuthall, Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas), Rodriguez, and Tucker with six, five, five and four, respectively.
Freshman goalie Fernando Gonzalez (Dallas, Texas) made his second straight-start and recorded his second-straight shutout. The Bulldog D made it easy for Gonzalez as they didn’t allow a single shot on goal.
One more regular season match remains for McPherson before the start of postseason play. The final game will come against Coach Doug Quint’s alma-mater Bethel College as he attempts to obtain his 100th career win. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT) on October 3rd in North Newton, Kan.
