Alva, Okla. – McPherson College opened up their season facing the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma Saturday with a set of two double-headers. Unable to get their bats working, the Bulldogs lost both of the two matchups that were scheduled for Saturday, 1-11 and 0-4.
Game 1
In the first of the two-game day, MC started off strong, scoring their one and only run of the day off of the bat of left fielder Frank Mora. The single was one of two for McPherson, the other coming from right-handed Dorian Shelton. Third-baseman Jeremy Moore had the team’s lone double, rounding out the Bulldogs three hits.
Taylor Werts got the first game start for McPherson. He gave up 11 runs on 11 hits. Werts played three innings striking-out three, he walked three as well. Senior Brad Stanley stepped in for Werts in the third and finished out the game, not giving up a hit to the ten batters he faced. Stanley had one walk in the three innings he pitched.
NWOSU’s team came into the contest looking like seasoned veterans as they have played five games prior to Saturday’s matchup. They started the game with five runs in the first inning and added three more in both the second and the third.
The Rangers were led by center fielder Patrick Johnson Jr. who had two hits and two RBIs. Juniors Camilo Baldelomar and Jarad Moore each had two hits as well. Jason Martyn was the winning pitcher for NWOSU.
Game 2
McPherson continued to struggle at the plate in the second game, stating up only one hit on a total of 22 at-bats. Northwestern Oklahoma State’s offense died off a bit as they charted four runs on eight hits.
The Bulldog’s sole hit was a single from first-baseman Trey DeRouen. The rest of the team struggled to figure out Clay Thomas’s pitching, striking out a total of 13 times. Casey McConnell was the pitcher in the losing effort. He recorded two strike-outs and two walks on the 27 batters he faced.
The Rangers didn’t score as many as they did in the first game but it was enough to take down MC, scoring two runs in both the second and third innings. Moore continued his two hit day with three more in the second game. Five other NWOSU players had a hit in this contest. Thomas pitched all six innings and logged the win.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow, Sunday, February 5
th with another double-header against the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State. Games are set to get underway at 12 p.m. (CT) in Alma, Oklahoma.
