Alva, Okla. – McPherson’s second set of double-headers against Northwestern Oklahoma State yielded more runs but not wins. The Bulldogs got goose-egged in their first matchup of the day on Sunday, losing 0-10. In the second game, MC was able to put four runs on the scoreboard but gave up four times that amount, making the final score 4-16 in favor of the Rangers.
Game 1:
In the opening game of the day, the Bulldogs pitching struggles continued as they gave up runs in five of the six innings and recorded only four strikeouts. Stephen Zike got the starting nod and lasted five innings, striking out four before being replaced by Curt Compagnone after the fifth. Zike gave up all 10 of the Rangers’ runs, eight of the earned as MC had 3 errors on the outing.
Offensively, McPherson was only able to record three hits on 21 at bats. Victorjose Betancourt, Jordan Slaton and Leander Green grabbed one hit each.
Northwestern Oklahoma State’s pitching once again took care of the McPherson batters. Eddie Cumpston was the starter for the Rangers and lasted six innings, striking out eight of the 18 batters he faced.
NWOSU had another great day from the plate, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits. First-baseman George Flores led the team with three RBIs on three hits, he also drew a walk. Wesley Brorsen made it to first base safely three times and hit in two.
Game 2:
A run scored in the first inning of the second game Sunday provided the Bulldogs with some much needed hope but it was short lived as Northwestern Oklahoma State brought in four in the bottom half of the inning. The Rangers gave up three more throughout the game but scored 12 more themselves, ending the contest on top 16-4.
McPherson got the bats going in the late game, recording 11 hits with catcher Betancourt getting three of those, putting his total at four for the day. Betancourt had an RBI as well. Taylor Werts, Tre DeRouen and Brad Stanley had one hit apiece. The Bulldogs hitting effort allowed them to have 10 more at bats than the previous game, putting the ball in play 21 times.
Starting pitcher Dion Herron went five innings, giving up 10 earned runs on 11 hits. He also had five strikeouts and only three walks. Compagnone came in, relieving Herron in the top of the sixth, and gave up six unearned runs off of two hits.
NWOSU out-hit McPherson again but by only two hits this time, knocking the ball 13 times. The designated hitter Jeff Martin led the team in hits with three and also had one RBI. The leader in the RBI category was Flores, again netting three of them on two hits. The Rangers had four other players with two hits.
On the mound, Northwestern Oklahoma State put out Evan James to start game two. He lasted three innings giving up two runs on six hits. He was followed by Chase Randall and Jordan Flitte who each allowed one run in two innings pitched. As a pitching group, the Rangers had eight strikeouts and four walks to go along with their four run total.
McPherson baseball will head back out to the field this Friday against Mid-American Christian University in Oklahoma City. That game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (CT)
