Lawrence, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team improves to 6-1 on the year with a convincing win over Baker University at the Jayhawk Indoor Tennis Complex on Monday. Having traveled more than 900 miles over the past five days, the Bulldogs stayed focused and resilient in their outing against the Wildcats.
In doubles, the Bulldogs number three doubles team of Jordan Stewart and Sean De Young got McPherson on the score board first with a swift victory scoring an 8-3 win. McPherson’s number one doubles team followed suit with their own 8-3 victory giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The Bulldog number two doubles team found themselves in a 2-0 hole but quickly reeled off eight straight games to give McPherson the sweep of doubles and a 3-0 lead going into singles play.
In singles, the Bulldogs continued to dominate as sophomore Mark Mahan scored the first singles victory for McPherson surrendering only two games in his match. Junior Torsten Keil-Long (Claremont, Calif.) again clinched the match for McPherson by winning his match equaling Mahan’s score. The Bulldogs continued to roll through the singles points and were only challenged at the number six singles position where Baker’s Ryan Gleue downed senior Cody Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in three sets.
McPherson’s match with Missouri Valley College has been re-scheduled for Sunday, April 15 in Marshall, Missouri at a time to be determined. The Bulldogs host their first home match of the season when they take on NJCAA nationally ranked Seward County Community College next Saturday at McPherson High School at 9 a.m. (CT)
