McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend dropping their first match to Seward County then defeated Concordia College (NE) in Salina. The Bulldogs hosted their first home match of the season welcoming Seward County Community College to McPherson. It was a rough and intense match that went the distance but unfortunately the Bulldogs were not able to secure any matches their way.
Seward County swept the doubles points to take a 3-0 lead going into singles play. The Bulldog number two doubles team of Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) and Thiago Da Silva (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) looked to help McPherson avoid the sweep but the Saints duo of Felipe Cruz and Raphael Machado were able to come from behind and over take the Bulldogs to give Seward the large lead going into singles.
In singles play, the Bulldogs fought tough at every position pushing the Saints but were not able to get any matches to fall in their favor. Junior Vyacheslav Bukatin (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Da Silva turned in the best performances of the day pushing their opponents into three sets but fell just short.
After the morning match McPherson traveled to Salina to take on Concordia College at Oakdale Park. It was a battle of the Bulldogs and McPherson came away on top sweeping Concordia without dropping a set.
The Bulldogs host crosstown rival Central Christian College this Thursday, March 29 at McPherson High School. Play is set to begin at 4:30pm.
