Newton, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s tennis team traveled to Bethel College on Tuesday, April 18.  MC improves to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the KCAC after their 8-1 defeat of the Threshers.

The Bulldogs found themselves in an unfamiliar spot, dropping one of the doubles points in conference as they lost at number one doubles but still took a 2-1 lead into singles play.  Bethel’s Clinton Chlumsky and Jesse Voth-Gaeddert took advantage of some uncharacteristic mistakes of the Bulldogs top duo of Thiago Da Silva and Torsten Keil-Long.  McPherson’s Da Silva and Keil-Long broke the serve of Voth-Gaeddert but were not able to hold serve themselves.  Bethel’s Chlumsky eventually served out the match with a 9-7 win.  The Bulldogs other doubles teams had no problem dispatching their opponents, winning 8-0 and 8-2 respectively.

In singles, it was all McPherson as the Bulldogs did not surrender a set.  Junior Jonathan Wickramasinghe got the Bulldogs on the board first with his win at number five singles 6-0, 6-0.  He was followed by sophomore Mark Mahan with an impressive win playing at number the one singles position 6-3, 6-1.  Slav Bukatin clinched the match for the Bulldogs with his hard fought win at number two singles 7-5, 6-1.  The rest of the Bulldogs cleaned up their singles matches with Ronaldo Filho making his return to the lineup after an injury.

The Bulldogs will travel to Winfield on Thursday, April 19 to take on Southwestern Christian College from Oklahoma at 12 p.m. (CT) at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas and then KCAC opponent Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., at 3 p.m. (CT).
