McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team opened KCAC play by hosting Tabor College. The Bulldogs looked impressive from start to finish as they shut out the Blue Jays for a 9-0 win.
In doubles, it was all Bulldogs as none of McPherson’s doubles teams gave up any ground. McPherson took the lead early on all three courts and did not look back. The Bulldogs swept all of the doubles points to go into singles with a 3-0 lead.
In singles, junior Jonathan Wickramsinghe (Hesperia, Calif.) got the Bulldogs started with his quick win at number five singles taking down his opponent in straight sets. He was followed by Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) who went perfect on the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number two singles. McPherson’s Torsten Keil-Long (Claremont, Calif.) gave the best singles performance of the day denying his opponent any games in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The Blue Jays made things interesting by capturing the second set against McPherson’s Vyacheslav Bukatin (Moscow, Russia) and Thiago Da Silva (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil). However, both Bulldogs settled down and dispatched their opponents in the third set with Da Silva turning in the more solid performance cleaning up the third set 6-0. Sophomore Sean De Young (Anaheim, Calif.) cleaned it up for the Bulldogs by taking down his opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the number six position.
The Bulldogs will travel to Friends University on Monday for their second KCAC match. Play is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. (CT)
