McPherson, Kan. – Despite a strong showing by the McPherson College women’s soccer team, the Lady Bulldogs were defeated by the Pioneers of MidAmerica Nazarene University 2-3 in overtime. This loss drops MC’s record to 1-4-2.
After four goals were scored in the opening period, it took 47 more minutes for the final ball to cross the goal line.
MANU struck first in the 15th minute but were tied up when a foul in the box by MacKenzie Smith gave MC’s Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) a penalty kick which she put in the upper-right corner, making the score 1-1. Another goal by MidAmerica gave them the advantage once again before Gabriela Navarro (Wichita, Kan.) fired a ball from 30 yards out to tie it once again, this time at 2-2.
After a scoreless second period, it only took 2:50 and one corner kick for the Pioneers to score the “golden goal,” winning 3-2.
The Lady Bulldogs attempted 13 shots in the game, five of which were on target; Navarro tallied two of the shots on goal. Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fired four balls at the goal but was only able to put one between the posts.
Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) logged seven saves in the three-goals allowed loss.
Another home match is next for McPherson as they take on Manhattan Christian College on Wednesday, September 26th at 5 p.m. (CT) at McPherson Stadium.
