Wichita, KS – The McPherson College men’s tennis team traveled to Wichita to take on the Newman University Jets for some indoor tennis action. The Bulldogs shrugged off a shaky start in doubles to cruise to an 8-1 victory over the Jets. MC improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs were leading in every doubles match early. Numbers two and three doubles broke serve early and held on to defeat their opponents 8-5. At number one doubles, senior Slav Bukatin and junior Sean Dullaghan took an early lead but played a little lax and allowed the Jets back into the match and dropped their doubles point by an 8-5 score.
McPherson entered singles competition with a 2-1 lead.
In singles the Bulldogs dominated, never trailing for too long in any singles match. Standout player Rafael Bulnes was the first Bulldog to register a win for McPherson with his very one sided victory at number one singles 6-1, 6-1. Junior Mark Mahan, coming off an injury, was able to play steady and relied on his experience to dispatch of his opponent 6-4, 6-2 giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead in the match. Senior Slav Bukatin brought it home for the Bulldogs with his 6-2, 6-3 win at number two singles. Torsten Keil-Long, Sean De Young, and Ronaldo Filho put the icing on the cake as they cruised in their singles matches.
The Bulldogs continue with indoor tennis action tomorrow as they play the Southwestern Christian University Eagles at Genesis in Salina. The match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. (CT)
