Box Score

McPherson, Kan. – Coming off a 3-1 series win over Saint Mary and a 4-2 record last week, Bulldog baseball showed that it was not a fluke as they took down RV Avila College of Kansas City, Missouri 14-1 on Monday.  MC is now 9-21 for the season and remains at 3-9 in KCAC play.

Game 1 – vs. Avila College – W 14-1

The contest started off well for Mac as they scored in the opening inning with Jose Nossa (Valencia, Venezuela) crossing home plate thanks to Brendan Miller (Taber, Alberta, Canada)  the KCAC’s Player of the Week.  Inning number two was relatively uneventful but the ‘Dogs followed that up with a two-run third.  Nossa came in again courtesy of Miller and was quickly followed by Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) who made it home after Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) singled to right.

Another quick inning for Avila allowed McPherson to keep their momentum which they used to put away the Eagles away; MC scored nine runs and went through the batting order nearly twice.  Keegan Bednasek (Topeka, Kan.) was the first to make it around, coming in after AC walked Wilson.  Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) came in on a Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) sacrifice fly and two batters later, Nossa walked home as Andrew Pina (Wichita, Kan.) was hit by a pitch.  Grant got his second RBI after his single helped Wilson score.  Bennett Ratzloff (Shawnee, Kan.) was also hit by a pitch and Miller went home to bring the score to 8-0.

Shelton got up again and hit in Pina.  Next, Nossa singled up the middle, scoring Grant and Marcus Wilson (Wichita, Kan.) who was pinch running for Ratzloff; Shelton also scored after a wild throw went into McPherson’s dugout.

The fifth inning posted another goose-egg for the Eagles but not Mac as they scored their final two runs.  Ratzloff hit one down the right field line to bring in Grant and after M. Wilson, again pinch running for Ratzloff, stole second, he was sent home on a Bednasek single to put MC in front 14-0.

Neither team scored a run in the sixth.  Avila, needing some help to stop the run-rule from coming into effect, put one on the scoreboard in the seventh but fell short of their mark, giving McPherson their 14-1 victory.

14 runs off of 13 hits and five walks received was how the ‘Dogs earned their win.  Nossa had a near perfect day as he made it on safely four out of his five at bats; his lone strikeout came in the fifth inning.  Grant tied Nossa with the most hits on the team as he banged out three in his four plate appearances.  Bednasek and Shelton each tallied two knocks of the ball while three others earned one.  Grant, Ratzloff and Nossa each grabbed two RBI.

Despite having seven hits, AC struggled to score any runs; Matt Ricketts led the squad with two hits and Josh Aguliar had the team’s lone RBI.

The starting pitcher for Mac was Willie Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) who went four run-less innings on his way to the W; he allowed three hits and four walks while striking out two of the 19 batters he faced.  Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) started the fifth inning and pitched to nine Eagles, allowing just two hits.  Colter Streck (Woodland Park, Colo.) ended the game at the mound for the Bulldogs and gave up the sole run on two hits.

MC baseball will next play host to the Ottawa Braves on Thursday, April 4 at Light Capital Diamonds; start time for the doubleheader is 5:00 p.m. (CT)
