McPherson, Kan. The McPherson College Men’s Tennis team hosted their final regular season home match this past Saturday at McPherson High School bringing in Friends University and Missouri Valley College. The Bulldogs came away with two dominating wins on their last homestead defeating the Falcons 8-1 and the Vikings 9-0.
Against KCAC opponent Friends, the Bulldogs started off quickly by sweeping the doubles points to take a 3-0 advantage. In singles, seniors Torsten Keil-Long (Claremont, Calif.) and Ronaldo Filho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) lead the way for the bulldogs downing their opponents 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively. The rest of the Bulldogs turned in equally solid performances to take an 8-0 lead; freshman Adolfo Serafin (Maracay, Venezuela) and Jordan Stewart (Sterling, Kan.) turned in the best performances of the day both defeating their opponents 6-0, 6-1. The lone loss for the Bulldogs came at #6 singles when Alex Consenza (Beverly Hills, Mich.) dropped his tough match 6-1, 6-1.
In the PM match against Missouri Valley College, the Bulldogs again built a quick lead taking all three doubles points to head into singles. The Bulldogs settled the match early when number one player Rafael Bulnes (Rosmalen, Netherlands) and senior Slav Bukatin (Moscow, Russia) played their opponents to retirement. Bulnes built a 4-1 lead before his opponent withdrew due to a persistent shoulder injury and Bukatin’s opponent withdrew due to hand injury sustained in the first set. Bukatin was leading 6-4, 1-0. Junior Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) turned in a strong performance against Wesley Ng defeating him 6-0, 6-3 in a match that had marathon rallies. Fellow junior Sean De Young (Anaheim, Calif.) and freshman Serafin quickly defeated their opponents to give McPherson a 8-0 score. Senior Keil-Long preserved the sweep for the Bulldogs but had to go the distance. In the third set tie-breaker Keil-Long took an early lead and never looked back.
Next the Bulldogs have their much anticipated clash with arch-rival the No. 6 Bethany College Terrible Swedes.
