McPherson, Kan. - In their first matches since returning from their California Tour, the McPherson College men’s tennis team took on Kansas Wesleyan University, Baker University, and the mighty Kansas wind.  The Bulldogs would prevail against all three, but it made for an interesting day of tennis.

In the AM match versus Kansas Wesleyan, the Bulldogs came out of the gate with a fast start against first and second doubles positions.  The number two team of Rafael Bulnes (Rosmalen, Netherlands) and Sean De Young (Anaheim, Calif.) wasted little time with their opponents or the wind as they took care of business and got McPherson on the board, dispatching their opponents 8-0.  Mac’s top doubles pair of Slav Bukatin (Moscow, Russia) and Sean Dullaghan (Los Angeles, Calif.) quickly followed suit as they took down their opponents 8-2.  McPherson’s number three pair consisting of the South American compadres seemed to have a little trouble re-adjusting to the infamous Kansas wind.  They found themselves down early against a gutsy Coyote third doubles pair and had to work their way back into the match.  Down 3-4, the duo of Adolfo Serafin (Maracay, Venezuela) and Ronaldo Filho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had to buckle down their service games and went on a 5-1 run to take the match 8-5 and give McPherson a solid 3-0 lead into singles play.

In singles play, it was all McPherson and the Kansas wind as the Bulldog’s took control of each match en route to a victory.  Junior De Young gave McPherson a 4-0 lead with his win at number three singles and was quickly followed by Dullaghan and Serafin to clinch the match in favor of the Bulldogs.  Senior Torsten Keil-Long (Claremont, Calif.) turned back a slight challenge from his opponent to capture the victory at the top singles spot 6-2, 6-4; while junior Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) layed mentally tough to hold off his opponent 7-5, 6-4.  Sophomore Jordan Stewart (Sterling, Kan.) cleaned up for the Bulldogs with his 6-1, 7-6 dramatic victory at the sixth singles position; Stewart was down 2-5 and fought all the way back to force a tie-breaker for the second set and the match and prevailed.

McPherson, Kan. - The PM match saw McPherson College going up against the Baker University Wildcats.  The wind had died down a little, but it also seemed that the Bulldogs were more dialed in after their AM match.

Much like the morning match against Kansas Wesleyan, the Bulldogs got at it quickly in doubles opening up with wins quickly on all three courts.  The top duo of Bukain and Dullaghan almost had a shutout but still prevailed with an 8-1 victory.  The Bulldog’s duo of Sean De Young and Rafael Bulnes got their second shutout of the day taking out their opponents 8-0 while the third doubles squad for McPherson cleaned up with an 8-3 win to give McPherson a 3-0 lead going into singles.

In singles, the Bulldog’s looked more polished on offense and defense as they did not give Baker University many opportunities for a look at a lead.   Top Bulldog Bulnes coming back from an illness gave his opponent little margin and played fiercely remarkable as he quickly subdued his opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory not surrendering a game for the entire day.   Double’s partner De Young also looked quite polished as he played an aggressive match and won 6-2, 6-3.  Freshman Serafin stayed on offense the entire match and garnered a 6-1, 6-1 victory for the Bulldogs while Jordan Stewart came through with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win.  Senior Filho seemed to be the only Bulldog with a little trouble as he had to fight harder in the second set to put down a comeback attempt from his opponent; Filho prevailed with a 6-1, 6-4 win giving the Bulldog’s their second 9-0 sweep of the day.
