Box Score McPherson, Kan. – It was a nail-biter down to the end as Mac soccer nearly took down No. 13 Benedictine College in the opening match of 2014. Following the 90 minutes of play, the Ravens held off a late charge from MC to win 3-2.
"We were good enough to win that game tonight," said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. "There's a lot of upside to this team, yet we've got a lot of room for improvement. The bottom line is that good teams will capitalize off others' mistakes and I give credit to Benedictine as they did that tonight."
Mac gave up a quick goal just six minutes into the contest but recovered and pushed back, eventually tying things up at one apiece as Nick Torres scored a goal coming from a beautiful Alex Ronneburg pass. BC scored in the 42nd minute to jump out in front right 2-1 before halftime. The Ravens scored their final goal in the 53rd minute but then the 'Dogs started their surge. MC's Octavio Villa put one past the keeper off a Brayam De La Cruz pass pulling McPherson within one goal in the 69th. The Bulldogs took just three more shots the rest of the way but had their share of opportunities to tie the match but failed to do so, losing 3-2.
McPherson took one more shot than Benedictine, kicking 11 at the goal with six being on target. Ronneburg led the team in shots on goal with two while Oscar Cortez took the most shots for the 'Dogs with three.
In his first season as the starting keeper, Aaron Parrott tabulated three saves while giving up the three Benedictine goals.
While other folks may get Labor Day off, the Mac men's soccer team will be working as they host RV University of Texas-Brownsville; the home contest begins at 11:00 a.m. (CT)
