Box Score 4 Salina, Kan. – After struggling to put runs on the board on Saturday, the Bulldog baseball team fared much better on Sunday against Kansas Wesleyan University. Mac went 1-3 on the weekend, winning the final game of the series.
Game 1 – L 24-6
McPherson held tough against Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday's game one, until KWU scored 13 runs late for a 24-6 victory at Dean Evans stadium.
Three runs in the top of the sixth helped MC close their deficit to 5-3. But six runs by Kansas Wesleyan in the bottom of the inning all but put the game to rest.
McPherson continued to fight and pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh, bringing the score gap to 11-6. Again, KWU had an answer with three runs of their own in the bottom then 10 in the eighth to bring the final to 24-6.
Matt Bryan racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Bulldogs; he tripled in the sixth inning and doubled in the seventh inning. Reily Martin and Jackson Goodmiller each had three hits to lead the charge for Mac.
Dylan Klava picked up the loss for the MC pitching staff; he allowed nine runs in five and two-thirds innings, walked two and struck out three.
Game 2 – L 19-0
Mac wound up on the wrong side of a 19-0 score in Saturday's second game.
A highlight for McPherson was recording a triple play in the second inning; Lucas Giesey snagged a line drive, touched first, then tossed it to Dylan Fontenot at second who touched the bag for the third out.
The Bulldogs recorded just two hits and drew three walks; Klava and Lane Fleming tallied the hits while Martin (1) and Fontenot (2) picked up the walks.
Colter Streck was charged with the loss; he allowed 14 runs in three innings on 16 hits and two walks.
Game 3 – L 10-6
Klava did all he could to give the 'Dogs a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Kansas Wesleyan, as McPherson lost 10-6 in Sunday's opening game.
In the top of the first, Mac grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Then after allowing one in the second, they put two more up in the third to jump back in front 3-2.
KWU scored one in each of the fourth and fifth to put them ahead 4-3. The Coyotes plated four in the seventh inning to take an 8-3 advantage. McPherson tried to claw back in with runs in the eighth and ninth but fell short, 10-6.
Klava had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits; he singled in the first inning and doubled in the third and ninth innings. Giesey went 3-of-5 from the plate, all being singles, and recorded a team-high three RBI. Fleming posted two hits in the team's loss.
Blake Ware couldn't get it done on the mound for the Bulldogs, taking a loss after allowing eight runs in six and two-thirds innings; he walked three and struck out seven.
Game 4 – W 9-3
In the final game of the weekend, the Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead after three innings and went on to win 9-3 after score three runs in the sixth and seventh combined.
Mac tallied 15 hits, three walks, and was hit by two pitches in the win. Trevor Haycock racked up three RBI on one hit for McPherson, homering in the second inning; the sophomore was 1-of-2 at the plate and also got hit twice. Klava and Evan Willow each went 3-of-4 with Willow logging two RBI.
Fleming recorded the win for MC as he allowed three runs over seven innings; the freshman struck out one, walked one, and surrendered eight hits.
McPherson, now 19-24 on the year, will host Sterling College this weekend at Light Capital Diamonds; start time for Friday's doubleheader is 5:00 p.m. (CT) with Saturday games scheduled for at 3:00 p.m. start.
